Cup Final April 5th 2009
Beighton Falcons Vs Birley Spa
The day was so long, the build up in the morning to getting to the ground and then the match.
My lads all turned up and looked great in their new outfits, they looked forward to the match and were very nervous. A great warm up followed and then the team talk. HAving got to the final they were down to the last 2 in this competition having knocked out the top teams of the division above. After a great win on Thursday night could they take that form into the final.
Beighton Falcons U15's Trophy Final 2009
The game kicked off and early doors Birley looked slightly the stronger, playing the width of the pitch very well. With some good crosses being put into the Falcons box. Beighton Falcons would edge themselves into teh game and get a breakaway chance with the very busy Sam and Monti upfront causing trouble for the opposition. Sam using his strength and speed. The first goal came from a free kick 30 yards out, a lofted ball would hit a head and escape Richard in teh bottom corner. Falcons then stepped up a gear and after great work from Ash down the left, Sam buried a great goal and 1 -1, now the game opened up brilliantly as the two teams went toe to toe, Birley were the ones to get the breakthrough when a great cross landed on the head of an outstanding Birley player who guided it away from Richard in goal.
Falcons also had there chances at the other end before the end of the first half but couldn't get the equaliser.
Now the team talk and the start of the second half, they knew they would get chances and that is exactly what they got. Birley had a chance very early on before Falcons took a grip of the game, they pushed, huffed and puffed but couldn't blow the house down, chances came and went, with Sam going closest when the ball was cleared off the line which would have made it 2-2. With all this pressure Falcons were clearly vulnerable at the back and several times Birley counetr attacked but Falcons held on. More attacks followed with the Birley defence staying strong. Monti broke through when the whistle was blown for an injury, everyone came back for the restart and Falcons kept going.Birley got there 3rd witha break away goal with Tom injured on the floor, the game was allowed to continue and the Birley were 3 -1 up with less than 15 minutes left to play. All caution was thrown out of the indow now and Falcons went for it, but sadly heads were down, they had battled bravely and in the closing minutes BIrley grabbed two more goals.
They were runners up in the cup for the first time ever, but sadly not winners, that title went to Birley and we congratulate them on the win, this was a special day out for the lads, their families and everyone else and I am proud of everyone for getting there.
